Super Bowl Advertisements

Watchout Super Bowl advertisers, advocacy groups are keeping an eye on all the Super Bowl advertisements this year.

Last year General Motors had to alter an Ad and drop it altogether in 3 days after a complaint filed by an Executive Director of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. You may be wondering what does an Executive from a Suicide Prevention organization have to do with a GM advertisement. If you remember the advert, it was about a Robot working in the GM plant, who looses a screw and was so disappointment that it walk over a cliff to it’s death. This ad and many such ads have provoked the audience and the advocacy groups have taken the marketers to task.

So, it was not just GM, gay advocacy group protested against an ad that forced Mars’ Masterfood US to yank and
apologise for its Snickers commercial that showed two men who accidentally kiss (while taking a bite of the
Mars bar from each end) - then react by pulling out their chest hair.

Interestingly the target for the marketers is 90 million viewers, not just on the Super Bowl day but even long after it’s over and done with. These commercials remain etched in our memories for a long time and people have the tendency to talk about it, even after the Super Bowl is over.

And why not, the marketers shell out around $2.7 million for every 30 seconds slot - they better entertain us this Superbowl!
