According to a sensory experiment conducted on NPR, when you simultaneously touch the nose and the toe, the signal from the toe takes a tenth of a second longer to reach the brain than the signal from the nose. This is more the case for really tall people as the distance required for the signal to travel is longer. Yet, somehow we perceive the touch as simultaneous because the brain holds the faster signal back until the slower signal reaches the brain. This is like the buffering that the computers do allow information to gather like in a streaming video.

According the NPR report, this means that the “now” for a tall person is about one tenth slower than the “now” for a shorter person. Therefore, the report went on to say that the taller person’s now is in the past whereas the shorter person’s now is more real time.

A real fascinating story!
