Dual layer DVDs which store 50 GB or 9 hours of high-definition video would soon be available. Blu-ray is the name for the standard which makes this possible by lasers that produce light in the blue-violet part of the spectrum. Presently, the regular household appliances like CDs and DVDs commonly make use of red lasers. In comparison to the Blu-ray standard, regular DVD discs hold only 4.5 GB on a single layer and 9 GB on a dual layer. The Blu-ray discs available on the market today are single layer with about 25 GB of capacity. In addition to the dual layer format, the specification has support for multi-layered discs which would increase capacity to 100 GB or more.

The minimum spot size that can be created with light depends on its wavelength. The shorter the wavelength, the better it gets due to smaller focus point. Blue lasers generate shorter wavelength than the traditional red lasers thereby making it possible to read and write information much smaller and allowing to pack more on a single disc. The quality too is far superior due to the high definition technology using more pixels.

As per reports of movie-experts, Blu-ray is the coolest thing in high-definition DVD recording and playback. Manufacturers could only recently adapt this technology to a DVD player by making it cheap and robust enough to fit into it. With the advent to Blu-ray, the competiting HD standard is dying a slow death. More move titles are available in Blu-ray than in HD DVD format. Now, with the dual layer Blu-ray, the options are going to be awesome.

With major studios such as Sony behind this format, it looks like a winner!
