Ed McMahon died today at the ripe old age of 86. He was best known as the side kick of Johnny Carson and the relationship between the two lasted for over 30 years. That’s longer than most marriages last! Even his own and that of Johnny Carson did not last longer.

The onscreen comic timing between Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon is legendary. One time, he apparently showed up drunk on the show and Johnny Carson handled it so well that it became one of the funniest episodes. He was said to have battled with his addiction to alcohol all his life.

In addition to the Tonight Show, I also remember Ed McMahon as the spokesman for American Family Publishers sweepstakes.

In recent times, Ed McMahon had apparently come on hard times due to a neck injury preventing him from working. His Beverly Hills home was said to be almost foreclosed before a deal was worked out. Even Donald Trump had stepped in to help. I did not know that he was also an ace fighter pilot during the Korean war.

He will definitely be missed and remembered for a long time to come.
